Phillip Lim creates new logo for China
Winner of this year’s CFDA award for Accessories Designer of the Year, designer Phillip Lim’s 3.1 Phillip Lim label has unveiled a new brandmark for the collections sold in China.
According to the company, it’s part of a strategy to fight a “a trademark squatter”, who currently owns the Chinese rights to the brand’s name for ready to wear and footwear, reported WWD.
From pre-fall onwards all new 3.1 Phillip Lim goods sold will carry the new brandmark (which debuted in the Spring 2013 advertising campaign) alongside the traditional 3.1. Philip Lim logo. Goods sold in China will use the new brandmark but will appear without the name and logo. While perhaps confusing for some customers, it allows the company to continue its growth in China while avoiding a protracted legal battle for the brand name.
A number of designers have faced issues over rights to their own name. German minimalist legend Jil Sander has recently returned to her namesake label, but between 2005 and 2012 the Jil Sander collections were designed by Raf Simons, while Sander herself was working on collections for Japanese brand Uniqlo under the +J banner.
