Peter Copping to Exit Oscar de la Renta
Yesterday it came to light that Peter Copping, creative director at Oscar de la Renta, will be leaving his position at the company. “After almost two years at Oscar de la Renta, personal circumstances require me to return to Europe,” Copping said in a statement. “I have loved my time in New York where I hope to return at some point in the future.”
Copping took on the role of creative director at the fashion house shortly before Mr. de la Renta’s passing in 2014, selected by the atelier himself. “After a career of 20 years in Paris, this is an important next step for me,” Copping told Women’s Wear Daily when initially hired. “Oscar de la Renta has defined American elegance for generations of women, and the opportunity to work with him and help ensure the future of the brand is very exciting.” Copping boasts a hearty experience in luxury fashion, having spent several years working for companies including Louis Vuitton and Sonia Rykiel.
Alex Bolen, the CEO of Oscar de la Renta, stated that, “We have always been in the business of creating beautiful clothes, and two of our greatest assets are our design studio and atelier. Our team will continue to work on next season’s collection with a keen focus on the level of sophistication and craftsmanship that are the hallmarks of the house. We wish Peter well in his future endeavours.” There has been no confirmation as to who will succeed Copping in his role.
This departure, while sudden, comes at a time when leadership and creative roles in the fashion industry have been turning over with surprising frequency. Among the most recent have been Maria Grazia Chiuri’s shift from Valentino to Dior, and Christopher Bailey’s change in title and responsibility within Burberry. In the midst of these changes, Louis Vuitton has been attempting to quell recent rumors to the effect of their own creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière, leaving before his contract is due for termination in 2018.
