Lagerfeld’s Short Film “Once and Forever” Revealed
An all-around accomplished individual, Karl Lagerfeld has again turned his energy to film direction. Released yesterday at the Chanel pre-fall show in Rome, the short film “Once and Forever” starred Kristen Stewart as an actress playing Coco Chanel in a biopic. Jamie Bochert appeared in the film, as well as Geraldine Chaplin as an older version of Coco.
The film seemed more a short exploration into the workings of a film set that happen to be making a movie about Coco Chanel than it was about the woman herself. We see snatches of famed points in the iconic designer’s life, a glimpse into two distinct ages and eras of the woman. In one instance Stewart sings for a moment the song that gave Gabrielle her nickname “Coco,” and in another scene Chaplin dramatically reclines on a sofa, cigarette in hand, and exclaims into a telephone, “I hate it when people talk about La Mode Chanel, La Mode Chanel, no, it’s not la mode, Chanel is style. Style above everything.”
Kristen Stewart has been an inspiration to Lagerfeld for several years now, being the face of the Chanel brand and having starred in a number of campaigns. Stewart’s persona as a muse has extended to her being the face of the Balenciaga brand as well, having starred in the ads for Balenciaga Rosabotanica perfume last year.
