Cannes 2014: red carpet fashion highlights

Outside of a few more extravagant numbers, the stars focused on subtle elegance and refined sophistication when planning their wardrobes for the latest Cannes Film Festival.

The understated colors worn confirmed this trend. When dressing fashion and cinema icons for the event, designers avoided flashy tones, opting instead for neutral looks in white, black and grey — the dominant shades on the red carpet in Cannes this year. Midnight blue, nude, champagne and burgundy were also among the top colors. Subtle shimmery effects and sequins added an element of glamour to several looks.

Certain celebrities defied the trend and stood out with bolder ensembles, all the while steering clear of gaudiness. This was the case for L’Oréal Paris spokesmodel Lara Stone, who stepped onto the red carpet in a stunning fuchsia Calvin Klein dress, and for Jessica Chastain, who turned heads in an asymmetrical electric blue gown by Atelier Versace.

Lace and sheer fabrics

In terms of materials and tailoring, the trend towards elegance was seen in the use of sophisticated sheer effects, lace and embroidery. Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio stood out in one of the most remarkable looks from the event: a white Atelier Versace gown embroidered with Swarovski crystals.

Other notable trends included pleats (Marion Cotillard’s Dior gown at the premiere of “In the Name of My Daughter”), asymmetrical tailoring (Eva Longoria’s nude turtleneck gown by Vionnet, worn to the “Foxcatcher” premiere) and vintage 1950s-inspired style (Blake Lively’s black and white Gucci gown worn to the “Captives” premiere).
