Last night at the London Coliseum, the British Fashion Awards honored talent across the industry, from designers and brands to models and photographers. Celebrities, models and more presented the winners with their trophies, including Olivier Roustieng, Karlie Kloss, Lucky Blue Smith, and the hilarious duo Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, who presented in character as Patsy and Edina from Absolutely Fabulous.
J.W. Anderson took home two trophies last night, garnering himself the Menswear and the Womenswear Designer Awards amid firm competition such as Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham and Christopher Kane. Charlotte Olympia was awarded this year’s Accessory Designer Award.
Stella McCartney was presented with the Brand Award, given to “a leading British based designer brand that has made an impact on the international stage over the past year in areas that could include global distribution, stand-alone store(s), dynamic campaigns and an e-commerce platform,” while Burberry’s advertising over the past year earned them the Creative Campaign Award.
The Award for Establishment Designer, presented to “a British womenswear or menswear ready-to-wear designer who has a strong global retail & e-commerce footprint and is a bastion of British fashion,” was awarded to Erdem; Mary Katrantzou took home the New Establishment Designer Award, given to “a British womenswear or menswear designer that is taking the global industry by storm.”
Three awards were presented for emerging talent, awarded in Womenswear, Menswear and Accessory categories, with Thomas Tait, Grace Wales Bonner and Jordan Askill respectively awarded for their work. Lady Gaga was among the 450 celebrities and guests in attendance, collecting the Red Carpet Award on the behalf of Tom Ford. Jourdan Dunn accepted the Model Award for her contribution to the international fashion scene over the past year.
As mentioned in various pieces last week, Karl Lagerfeld and Alessandro Michele each took home unrivaled awards, the Outstanding Achievement Award and International Designer Award respectively. Nick Knight also fell into this unrivaled category, receiving the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator.
Critics in the past have mentioned issues with the British Fashion Awards’ small talent pool, but though there were a few repeats, this year’s ceremony awarded not only unquestionably talented nationals, but also presented a number of awards to international talents in the industry. The highly coveted awards, established in 1989, have not lost their luster or draw, continuing to be a night of celebration for the industry and their fans alike.
