在70年代的迪斯科年代，公民权发展和黑人权利运动的顺利进行使得此片成为第一部由黑人出演主人公的电影。在足球运动员和模特生涯后，Richard Rowntree终于成为了一名电影明星。Rowntree曾在1972年对纽约时报说过：虽然夏福特是一个虚幻的人物，但孩子们在看过这部电影的时候，会看到黑人在这里是赢家。时装设计师Joseph Aulisi在此片之前一直为百老汇工作。在此片之后他也一直为此类电影设计戏服，以至于今天当我们联想到黑帮形象必定离不开黑色的软呢帽、长风衣和雪茄。夏福特在片中穿着的是喇叭裤，黑色皮夹克和高领毛衣。影片首次运用的蓝调音乐给人们带来了全新的感觉。
