轻便旅行箱一名是由William Ewart Galdstone一名得来的，19世纪由J G Beard设计出来。这种包款最早是设计作为多功能旅行箱使用的，也就是说它有两个储物层，但现在它多被设计成直边的手提箱款式。

多数的轻便旅行包都是硬皮质的，在内部有一个立体的框架，长比高多。它同样也有两个小把手可以用来手提或挎于前臂。
