Does Feminism Help Women Feel Better About Their Body Image?

Recent research conducted by the University of Georgia reveals a correlation between feminist beliefs and improved body image. The findings indicate that both feminist mothers and their daughters experience a more positive perception of their bodies and exhibit reduced feelings of shame regarding their physical appearance compared to those who do not embrace feminist principles. So what does that mean as a whole for women in society?

 

How Negative Talk Affects Self-Perception

A woman is deemed virtuous by societal norms if she doesn’t take up too much space, prioritizes the needs of others, exercises restraint regarding her own desires, and suppresses any «voracious» and pleasure-seeking impulses that may conflict with the principles of morality, humility, and passivity. In a sense, it restricts women from getting to live their truth, forcing them to adhere to some ideals that have a negative impact on their mental health.

 

The Body Positivity Movement

This movement is about helping women focus on personal growth and self-worth over adhering to specific “rules” as to what it means to be an attractive woman. It is a direct result of feminist beliefs since it focuses on the unjust treatment of women and helps to create opportunities for their progress so that they can thrive.

 

The Body Is Not an Apology Movement

The TBINAA movement is also geared towards what they deem “body terrorism,” which includes fighting against racism and violence, the sexual, physical, and emotional assault on women, and the shame placed on them for not adhering to societal standards. The movement helps women to challenge those negative beliefs and to foster self-love so that they can see their worth outside of what society wants them to be.
