Sydney fashion week: highlights from the first days

Perry hired Victoria’s Secret star Alessandra Ambrosio to open and close his Spring-Summer 2014/2015 show which featured a shining gold runway. Lace dresses came delicately embroidered and also appeared with an interesting semi-sheer snakeskin effect, alongside color-blocked pieces and plenty of peplum skirts and dresses.
Ellery
A graduate of London’s famed Central St. Martins design school, Kym Ellery channeled some of that city’s punky spirit for her models’ choppy hair and ear and nose chains. The clothes were cool and minimalist, with added texture provided by the plentiful pleats and crisp, crimped fabrics.
Leroy Nguyen
One of Australia’s hottest emerging designers, Nguyen was inspired by “Pan’s Labyrinth” for his latest show. Sporty and masculine tailored shirts arrived paired with shorts and mid-length skirts, with bright digital floral prints for color.
Toni Maticevski
The Melbourne-based fashion designer opened with minimalist black and white eveningwear with sporty mesh panels, adding black and white all-over florals, and then blocks of bright orange. The models’ cool chokers were a collaboration between Maticevski, Dinosaur Designs, and Swarovski.
Cameo
The Cameo show played with more lace, more monochrome florals, and more peplum, adding a colorful oil-slick effect print, sporty sheer bombers, and silk tailoring to the mix. Neon green and black-and-white stripes and geometric triangle patterns also caught the eye.
