Edun Creative Director Danielle Sherman Steps Down
On May 25th it was announced by Edun that their Creative Director of 3 years, Danielle Sherman, would be departing from the company to, “pursue other career opportunities”. A co-founder of The Row, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s design label, Sherman was previously the design director for both men’s and women’s T by Alexander Wang as well.
“What Edun has achieved over the past three years represents an important step, with a new vocabulary and a real dynamic for the future” stated brand found Ali Hewson of Sherman’s work with the company. “I am very grateful to Danielle for her valuable contribution, and for elevating the conversation about ethical fashion.”
Established in 2005, Edun is an ethically-focused label started by Ali Hewson and Bono, based in New York. “In respect of its mission to source production and encourage trade in Africa, EDUN mixes its modern designer vision with the richness and positivity of this fast-growing continent,” the company’s website states. “EDUN is building long-term, sustainable growth opportunities by supporting manufacturers, community-based initiatives and partnering with African artists and artisans.”
While the company does manufacture its collections in countries outside the continent of Africa, including Peru and China, according to a 2014 interview, 85% of the collection pieces were set to be manufactured in sub-Saharan Africa. Today that number has reached a staggering 95% compared to 37% in 2011, a feat credited to Sherman , through her leadership in the company.
“The vision of Edun is one of new luxury, where the promotion of trade with Africa goes hand in hand with beautiful clothing, accessories and jewelry.” Sherman remarked in a statement for Edun on the LVHM website. “This vision can be seen in all aspects of the House, from supply to advertising, including design and manufacturing.” With such accomplishments and experience behind her, Sherman’s pursuit of further opportunities will no doubt be movements worth watching.
