Last days to see Isaac Mizrahi’s designs in NY ‘Peter and the Wolf’ production

The “Project Runway” judge, designer and all-round creative dynamo Isaac Mizrahi has sprinkled some holiday magic on the Guggenheim’s latest performance of “Peter and the Wolf.”

Conducted by George Manahan and choreographed by John Heginbotham, Mizrahi took the creative reins on the project, directing the production as well as designing costumes and sets.

Set in a modern-day mid-winter version of Central Park, the designer created six costumes for the show which opened on December 7, and closes on December 15. These include sumptuous feathered wings for Birdie, a preppy school boy look (with tartan socks) for Peter, and tutus and headscarves for Duckie.

While he admits to being inspired by David Bowie and Elaine Stritch’s versions of the tale, the new version is entirely Mizrahi’s interpretation: “Sometimes when you have a vision, it’s more work to fight the darn thing than it is to realize it,” he told WWD

Mizrahi debuted as a director in 2010, with an Opera Theater of St Louis production of Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music” also designing the set and costumes. His next project will see him return to the Opera Theater with a production of “The Magic Flute” in the spring, also choreographed by John Heginbotham.
