Travel, Fashion, & Etiquette: Your Sartorial Guide to Looking the Part Overseas

Posted on

A wise sage once said that it is better to travel well than to just arrive. Among life’s many experiences, few can compare with the joy of traveling, especially abroad. Many cross long distances and borders to meet new people, cultural awareness, stress reduction, and personal growth.

It was found that 30% of Americans had plans for international travel in 2024. Out of these, 62% had their eyes set on destinations with lots of beaches. As the cooler months of the year approach, this may not be your aspiration.

However, overseas travel does carry with it a sense of nervousness regarding fashion. You want to be at your sartorial best, click tons of pictures, and make the most of your vacation. Fret not! This article has you covered.

No, this is not your typical fashion guide on what to wear and where. The focus of this article is to familiarize you with basic fashion etiquette, when followed, will naturally elevate your style for every trip.

Pack Light and Smart

We understand the irresistible urge to carry practically your entire wardrobe for any anticipated trip. This may not be a great idea. Keep in mind that clothes are not the only items you must carry along. Other essentials need their designated space in your luggage.

Plus, it makes no sense to carry a ton of clothes just in case and end up wearing only a handful of them. The forward-looking traveler would always pack light and smart. The main benefit of packing less clothes is that it will reduce stress and help you focus on the experience.

Naturally, your trip becomes more sustainable as you lower your carbon footprint. In any case, fast fashion comes with a heavy price. It is responsible for nearly 10% of the global carbon emissions. What’s more, is that those garments are seldom built to last.

They fray and look dull after a few washes, which means you will be tempted to shop more frequently. Instead, a sustainable capsule wardrobe full of high-quality pieces that easily mix and match with each other is the best. It will remove worries associated with “not having anything to wear.”

Moreover, the clothes will be durable to ensure they look as good as new for years to come. The only thing is you must maintain them properly and pack them well. As an added measure of safety, consider traveling with a steam iron to remove any creases. So, start with packing fewer clothes but ensure each piece is versatile, timeless, and can be used to create multiple outfits.

Always Carry Pajamas, But Know When to Wear Them

Is your idea of lounge or nightwear during trips dri-fit shirts and leggings? Then, it’s time to switch things up. Studies have picked up some interesting stats about sleepwear across US states. Some of the most stylish pajama-style sleepwear is owned by residents of Florida, Indiana, Arkansas, and Alabama.

Those belonging to Colorado, Nevada, and South Carolina prefer to sleep naked. This may work at home (though still not recommended) but it should not be practiced in a hotel room. It may lead to problems like lowered body temperature, allergies, and discomfort.

Moreover, when stylish women’s pajamas are available, why would you not opt for them? They are made of soft cotton or silk to ensure maximum relaxation and comfort. You can even change into a favorite pair on the flight, though that is up to your discretion.

According to LazyOne, for those who wish to wear loose-fitted loungewear, sleep shirts or regular-fit PJs would be the ideal choice. Leggings and other garments can be uncomfortable, causing itches, rashes, and even pain if the seam is too tight.

This is something you do not have to worry about with snug-fit sleepwear. Carry at least three to four comfortable sets depending on the duration of your trip. They will even help you recover faster from jet lag.

Consider the Destination’s Dress Code

Another major fashion etiquette to keep in mind while traveling overseas is to be mindful of the destination’s dress code. Some of it can be universally applicable. For instance – you would scarcely find someone at the club in trainers, running shoes, and a singlet.

There may be others you need to educate yourself about. An example would be Japan where women scarcely wear leggings, casual t-shirts, and jeans. In this country, it’s best to stick to formal clothing like trousers, shirts, tailored skirts, etc.

One thing to remember while traveling is that you’re a guest in another country. It’s possible that what you’re comfortable with may not be acceptable to the locals. A good practice is to research the local dress code so you can blend in with the crowd.

That way, you don’t even have to appear as a tourist. This is not to suggest that you must not carry anything that makes you stand out. However, stick to the local dress code for the most part. On a similar note, be respectful of the local religious beliefs and customs while choosing your travel outfits.

If you’re traveling to any of the Middle Eastern countries, make modesty a priority. In other words, carry loose-fitted long garments that cover your shoulders, belly, and knees. Though tourists are not required to cover their hair, you may feel more comfortable doing so to blend with the locals. This will avoid offense and let them know that you respect their traditions.

Since we have made fashion etiquette during overseas travel our main focus, it’s important to mention the value of vintage sartorial charm. It includes timeless garments and accessories that can work with any style, occasion, or location.

The current worldwide vintage outfits market was sized at $81 billion in 2023. Every year, demand for all things vintage continues to rise. Some things never go out of style and if you make them your travel companions, you’re sure to enjoy a blissful and sartorially ready trip.
