Yohji Yamamoto

Yohji Yamamoto Woman Autumn-Winter 2017-18 – Seeking a dark palette of jet blacks and dusky greys, broken only momentarily by strokes of deep red and olive, Yamamoto segwayed along a melancholic avenue, displaying a redefinition of the female silhouette.

The dark ensembles, apart from unveiling a mysterious charm, allowed emphasis to be placed on the shapes of the designs; ruffled textures were draped in such a way that led to obscured silhouettes, straightforward and fitted sleeves were enhanced by folding and twisting designs with overlapping materials constructing an unusual composition.

Dispersed throughout the experimental figures were slightly more tailored looks, including a mixture of single-breasted and double-breasted coats as well as short bomber jackets with ribbed collars and thick hems. Accompanying several pieces were round-crowned bowler hats as well metal chains with interconnecting key-rings, alluding to an almost industrial inspiration.

Bringing new dimensions to the body through black, gathered ruches or dark fabric scrunched around the waist and torso to create an architectural elegance, Yamamoto’s collection exuded a striking minimalism with fine touches of chromatic inventiveness that did not go unnoticed.
