Oliver Spencer
Oliver Spencer Man Autumn-Winter 2016-17 – There is a photo of Ginger Baker from 1972, sitting through an interview, wearing a shaggy oversized fur coat and snake boots. Similarly, Oliver Spencer’s show was delightfully retro, and its groove revived the prints, patchwork, tweed and corduroy of the 1970’s. The styling was quintessentially British, the trench, ever-so present, the fits we recognise on fellow Londoners and the quirk in the accessories.
But on this catwalk, the style memorabilia also merged with tribal African culture, recognisable in the earth tones and ethnic influences in the prints, inspired by Baker’s musical collaboration with musician Fela Kuti.
Suddenly, we could see a bit of Africa from where we were, in gloomy London.
