Comme des Garcons

Comme des Garcons Woman Autumn-Winter 2017-18 – Comme des Gargons took some bold choices and enigmatic risks in this collection, which both captured the truly avant-garde nature of the maison, while also firmly planting Rei Kawakubo as a forward-thinking trendsetter of Paris Fashion Week.

Models were covered with a range of coloured materials that moulded around the body like a walking piece of art. Reconstituted cloth in greys and blacks were woven to create a patchwork design, matched with a simple and athletic trainer with contrasting black bow detailing. Bulging lines were noteworthy, with materials curving outwards and arched around in circular, rectangular and squared shapes, many of which alluding to a mannequin-esque base. While some ensembles attempted to define a figure of sorts with elasticated belts tied to the waist, most encased the models in a material sack where arms were covered within the cave of cushions.

Textures were a diverse feature; metallic cushioning was used to create an almost foil quality, a plastic structure was paired with a soft bolster to create a two-tone, tiered skirt and grey yarn had dispersed coloured thread that displayed a tattered feel. Hair styles were made of metal mesh, sculpted into wonderful and elongated shapes, adding a new dimension of the extraordinary.
