Balenciaga
Balenciaga Woman Autumn-Winter 2016 – Quirky coats were a main feature on the catwalk at Balenciaga, where the autumn/winter staple underwent a wide variety of incarnations.
Corporate business styles opened the show, with tweed and checks forming the prints of choice for structural blazer jackets and business dresses. Playing against this simple formality however, was the decision to pad these designs at the waist, shortening the body to create an elevated hourglass shaped that challenged traditional female silhouettes.
Coats with wide open V-necks worn just off-the-shoulder were also popular, broadening the model’s upper body and creating a deconstructed look which gave the impression that the designs were about to be taken off before they were taken down the catwalk.
This approach was seen dramatising sophisticated takes on the raincoat, loud-coloured puffa jackets, shearling trimmed leather jackets and camel trench coats alike, evoking a simultaneous sense of fun and sensual glamour.
As the collection continued, this feminine liveliness developed into bright floaty dresses in clashing floral prints, teamed with zany red and white stripy tights. There were less silhouette changing details here but the handkerchief hemlines and varied textures ensured a similar sense of fun and individuality were channelled.
