Stella McCartney Creates First Menswear Line

Stella McCartney, well-known UK fashion designer, debuted her new menswear collection last week. The line was showcased with her women’s spring 2017 resort collection at London’s Abbey Road music studios.

The inspiration behind the collection is non-other than her father, Paul McCartney. The location of the show was chosen because it’s also the studio that the Beatles used to record hits in the 1960s.

McCartney’s usual sporty, fun and wearable aesthetic transitioned beautifully into menswear. The long-awaited menswear collection was shown alongside the womenswear, and seemed to be the star of the entire event. Male models were wearing large cardigans, pyjama-inspired shirts and the perfectly tailored coats – not too tight, and not too baggy.

The first sneak peak of the collection was shown at the S/S2017 fashion show in Paris last month, by being showed off by the designer’s husband, Alasdhair Willis. McCartney explains that the 60s were ‘the perfect place to offer that wardrobe to men’.

The collection is a mix of printed shirts, coloured suits and drawstring trousers. The colour palette had an arrangement of flower embroideries, as well as taupes, greens and khakis. There were also graphic tees and co-ordinated knit tracksuits. The models danced and played pinball while wearing playful socks, to bring the collection to life. Accessories included sneakers, football scarfs and sandals.

In 2010, the designer first debuted her children’s clothing line. The designer knows the fundamentals of men’s tailoring through having apprenticed under Savile Row tailor Edward Sexton after college. Earlier this year, McCartney also ventured into the world of perfume and collaborated with Adidas. The designer’s step into menswear really cemented the McCartney name into today’s fashion.

The debut menswear line is also available now for pre-order in its online store, and is arriving with in-store purchases in January.
