Laura Brown Becomes New InStyle Editor-in-Chief

It was announced on Monday that Laura Brown, the former features and special projects director and executive editor at Harper’s Bazaar, has taken the position of editor-in-chief at InStyle. This comes nearly a month after the announcement that the previous editor Ariel Foxman had tendered his resignation.  “With the close of our major September fashion issue and a recent print and digital redesign behind me, I’ve decided to explore new opportunities,” Foxman said of his resignation in a statement released by Time, Inc. “I am grateful to Time Inc. and will always appreciate the incredibly talented team I’ve worked with over the years.”

Brown will start in the position this coming Monday, August 29th. “Taking the lead of such an iconic brand is a dream come true,” Brown said of her new position at InStyle. “InStyle is at the forefront of celebrity, beauty, fashion and popular culture—areas I’ve loved weaving together throughout my career. There are so many exciting opportunities to grow the brand across all platforms. I can’t wait to get started.”

In her 11 years at Harper’s Bazaar, Brown has gone beyond editorial work to develop a show on WME/IMG’s Made2Measure channel called In and Out of Fashion, as well as The Look, Harper’s Bazaar’s own video series. In The Look, Brown explored fashion and style, and interviewed celebrities and fashion icons from Karl Lagerfeld and Christy Turlington, to Lena Dunham and Leandra Medine.

Brown has also curated a hearty social media following, boasting over 100k followers on Instagram and 37k on Twitter. A quick glance through shows exactly why – interesting, witty, aware and concerned, Brown offers a view into her own life and beyond, taking a step away from the narcissistic normalities of certain social media channels to champion causes and celebrate others. In her own moment of success, she was sure to take the time to celebrate those who helped her achieve her success, thanking the editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar Glenda Bailey on Instagram.

“With her dynamic point of view, collaborative spirit and deep expertise in fashion and celebrity, Laura will be an exciting and transformative force for InStyle,” Jess Cagle, editorial director for the celebrity, entertainment and style group, said of Brown. “Her rich experience combined with her profound storytelling skills across print, digital, video and television will take this powerful brand to even greater heights.”
