Dreaming in Gold at the Oscars
Dreaming in Gold at the Oscars
As everyone knows (or rather should know) the Oscar’s were held this Sunday in Hollywood, California – approximately 5,437 miles away and 8 hours behind rainy London from where I attended an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) screening of the anticipated event, at Ham Yard hotel in Soho. Although I was of course very excited, as was everyone else, to see if Leonardo would finally win his much-awaited award (spoiler alert: he did), it was the red-carpet garments that I knew would keep me entertained until the early hours of Monday morning.
Whilst the slogan for this year’s ceremony was ‘We All Dream in Gold’, campaign executed by agency L.A., it was only Margot Robbie in her gold sequinned Tom Ford dress that seemed to make that ‘dream’ a reality. Although I would argue that nominee Alicia Vikander’s mellow yellow Louis Vuitton strapless gown, which featured what looks like a silver sequinned ‘fish bone’ pattern, also made a semi-gesture to the slogan. Apart from these two ensembles what is most noticeable is the great range of different looks on the carpet this year. From Charlize Theron’s beautiful statement red Dior Haute Couture dress with its plunging neckline, to Heidi Klum’s dreamy lilac one shoulder Marchesa dress which floated down the carpet and Kate Winslet’s more assertive black latex strapless Ralph Lauren piece, one thing’s for sure – we weren’t short of variety this year and I was definitely right in my prediction that the fashion would keep me interested!
Although there were many looks that were definitely as they say ‘on point’, for me, the look of the day was a close match between Rachel McAdam’s simple emerald silk halter neck August Getty Atelier and Brie Larson’s electric blue satin Gucci. Both exuded a simple yet refined elegance, but as I am always partial to both satin and silk I was unable to pick a true favourite.
Having covered the most memorable fashions of the event, the question still remains: what did our most talked about nominee sport down the red-carpet? As modest and handsome as ever, Leo kept it classic with a Giorgio Armani suit and paired it with Christian Louboutin loafers. However let’s be honest, no one was really looking at what he was wearing with that Oscar in his hand.
