Condé Nast fashion photography archives to go on display in Paris

Posted on

Around 150 photography prints from Condé Nast’s archives in New York, Paris, Milan and London, shot by some of the greatest fashion photographers from 1918 to today, will be on display to the public for nearly three months.

Visitors will be able to admire the work of around 80 world-renowned photographers, many of whom were first introduced to wider audiences thanks to the editors and directors of the media company’s prestigious magazines.

From Baron Adolph de Meyer to Steven Meisel

The exhibit features a selection of the work of Baron Adolph de Meyer, widely considered the first fashion photographer. In 1913, Condé Nast hired him in New York as a full-time photographer for Vogue, then Vanity Fair. He later became the chief photographer at rival magazine Harper’s Bazaar after returning to Paris.

Following how fashion photography has evolved since de Meyer’s days, both in terms of subject matter and technique, the exhibit presents the work of Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, William Klein, Helmut Newton, Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, and Miles Aldridge, among others.

Couture scenography

Around 15 couture designs — all from the Palais Galliera’s collection — will be exhibited alongside these archival photographs.

In addition, visitors will be able to view around 50 Condé Nast publications displayed behind glass, and interactive screens will allow them to browse through the fashion magazine highlights of the past few decades.

Already presented in Berlin, Milan, and Edinburgh, the exhibit — organized in partnership with the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Minneapolis — will be on display March 1 – May 25, 2014 at the Palais Galliera in Paris.

The exhibit will then be seen at the Museum Bellerive in Zurich (July 11-October 19, 2014) before moving onto the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach (November 20, 2014-February 22, 2015) and Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas (March 14, 2015-June7, 2015) and finally heading to Tokyo in Spring 2016.
