Earlier this year Marks & Spencer announced their collaboration with Alexa Chung, who, as M&S put it, “explored our rich & extensive M&S archive, to curate this collection of unique pieces.” Available now, this collection is made up of pieces that harbor a distinctive 1990’s vibe with hints of the 1980’s and ‘70’s, a theme reinforced by a campaign video made after a vintage style, featuring models using corded phones and appearing to have been filmed through an early camcorder.
Among the prominent pieces are slip dresses and camisole tops, two ‘90’s trends that hit heavily at the spring/summer 2016 shows, and square-heeled shoes. Round-toed white trainers, high-waisted mini skirts and a mid-calf pleated skirt meet thin cardigans and ruffled blouses that look like a thoroughly 1970’s staple. Overall, the 29 pieces make up a decidedly trendy collection filled with a throwback take on wardrobe staples.
The Guardian interviewed customers entering M&S in search of the capsule collection, revealing that the department store may have found a strong method for drawing in young shoppers: “I came for Alexa Chung’s style. That’s why I am here,” 18-year-old student Anya Magliano Wright told The Guardian. “I wouldn’t say I am a regular M&S shopper but I like Alexa Chung. It’s the fact that everything she wears is a complete mixture of different categories of style – really girly and then really androgynous.”
Alexa Chung, an English presenter and model, has become known for her style, and is currently working as a contributing editor at British Vogue, as well as presenting a web series for the publication that explores several angles of the fashion industry, from modelling and blogging to designing and buying.
The collection prices range from £19.50 to £89, available online and in Ireland and the UK.
