Diamond Ring Myths Debunked

Posted on

Diamond rings always make a statement, whether you’re treating yourself or gifting one to a loved one. Not to mention, diamonds tend to come with a hefty price tag so making the right decision is important.

These precious gems are more popular than ever but many consumers still fall prey to misconceptions about what makes a diamond truly valuable and beautiful. From misunderstandings about carat weight to the significance of the cut, these myths can cloud your judgment.

Below, we debunk the most common diamond ring myths using the Four Cs (clarity, cut, carat, and color) so you can make a confident and informed purchase.

Myth 1: The Bigger the Carat, the Better the Diamond

Many people believe that a diamond’s carat weight is the ultimate indicator of its quality. This isn’t entirely true.

Bigger doesn’t always equal better since the appearance and brilliance of a diamond are influenced by factors, especially its cut. The same applies to the stone’s clarity and color. A large but poorly cut stone riddled with inclusions will not look as impressive as a smaller, well-crafted gem.

Myth 2: All Diamonds of the Same Carat Weight Are Equal

It’s easy to assume that diamonds of the same carat weight are equal in quality, but this is far from the truth. Two diamonds can have the same weight yet differ significantly in value and appearance.

For instance, one diamond may have internal flaws that affect its clarity, while another might have a poorer cut, reducing its sparkle. Even a slight tint in color can affect the overall look of a diamond, making it appear less glittering than a higher-grade stone of the same size.

Myth 3: Colorless Diamonds Are Always Superior

While colorless gems are a good sign that the diamond is real, it’s a misconception that they’re the only diamonds worth buying. ‘Colorless’ diamonds (graded D to F) are highly prized but those with a tint of color (graded G to J) can be just as gorgeous and are often available at a more affordable price point.

In fact, the difference between a diamond graded as colorless and one with a faint tint is often so subtle that it’s virtually invisible to the naked eye, especially once set into expertly designed engagement rings.

Myth 4: Clarity Flaws Are Always Visible

The term ‘flaw’ in diamonds often suggests visible imperfections, but that’s not necessarily the case. Diamond clarity grades range from Flawless (FL) to Included (I), but most flaws are so small they cannot be seen without magnification.

Diamonds with clarity grades like Very Slightly Included (VS1-VS2) or Slightly Included (SI1-SI2) typically have imperfections that are invisible to the naked eye.

Myth 5: The Cut of the Diamond Doesn’t Matter

Many believe that the most important factor is a diamond’s clarity or size. In reality, the cut is arguably the most critical element in determining a stone’s brilliance. A well-cut diamond reflects light internally and externally, creating the sparkle that diamonds are famous for.

Cut grades range from Excellent to Poor, and investing in a higher cut grade ensures that your diamond will truly dazzle.
