Fashion for 2014: the year of pleats 2.0

Posted on

Some of the biggest names in fashion packed their collections with innovative pleats for 2014. Here’s some luxury inspiration from the runways of New York, London, Paris and Milan.

Proenza Schouler in New York City was early in the game with stunning metallic pleated skirts, a mixture of metal and material that was also picked up by Dries Van Noten (the Belgian curled his into almost floral shapes).

In London Christopher Kane had one of the knockout shows of the season, and he was bang on trend too. Ghostly light, Kane’s pleated dresses were held together with elaborate clips.

Christian Dior designer Raf Simons loves to set the agenda and added a thigh-baring cutaway on his sideways-leaning pleated skirts. Meanwhile, in Milan, Salvatore Ferragamo’s satin pleats were ruched to one side of his champagne dresses and held in place with belts.

Céline’s ‚tribal‘ pleats were an exotic departure for the label, part of designer Phoebe Philo’s general aesthetic shift away from the minimalist mainstream she helped to create.

Expect plenty of pleats to hit the stores this spring, as buyers and the high-street leap on the trend. The pleated look has also got a good chance of hanging around for Fall-Winter 2014-2015, but we’ll have to wait until the February shows to see.
