Michael Costello Woman Autumn-Winter 2017-18 – Michael Costello stuck to a simple yet effected monochromatic pallet for his NYFW show. The collection seemed to be divided into three distinct parts, a selection that resembled risqué bridal wear, head to toe disco style embellished dresses, and a finale of black gowns with a gothic, fairly-like feel.

The collection had a somewhat capsule feel to it, with only a small selection of materials used such as; sheer styles, sparkly embellishments, silk and tulle. The made the use of western style waist belts as a thematic device to pull the collection together even more prominent and effective.

Many of the sheer dresses shared a subtle polka dot design, whether they were black or white, creating a textured theme throughout these pieces. The soft flowing fabric of the gowns was complimented by the afro hair of the models, a style which may prove to be a bold choice considering the backlash faced by Marc Jacobs for his use of dreadlocks in his SS17 show.

Compared to the bridal style of many of the silk and sheer tulle gowns, other designs were futuristic with their use of flattering cut-outs and clean, minimalistic fabrics. Styles which are sure to be seen throughout the upcoming award shows.

Perhaps the most refreshing element of this collection, was the use of models with hourglass figures, which really accentuated the feminine forms of the gowns such as low cut necklines and thigh high splits. This made the dresses come to life, and the models were truly wearing the clothes, as opposed to the other way around.
