Grace Coddington Resigns as Creative Director at Vogue
At 74 years old, Grace Coddington is stepping down from the position of Creative Director at Vogue after 30 years in the role. A spokesperson for American Vogue confirmed the news, stating that, “After more than 25 years at American Vogue, Grace Coddington will assume the role of creative director at large and take on additional projects outside the magazine. She will work on several Vogue fashion shoots throughout the year.” Among these projects will be a fragrance in collaboration with Comme des Garçons.
“I’m not running away from Vogue, because it has opened so many doors,” Coddington remarked on the subject, “But it will be nice to collaborate, and nice to go out, give talks to people. It’s just another approach. I’m certainly not going into retirement. I don’t want to sit around.” At the age of 19 Coddington was discovered as a model by Vogue, joining British Vogue as a junior fashion editor in 1969, then the Senior Fashion Editor in 1976. In 1987 she moved from London to New York to work as Design Director at Calvin Klein, joining American Vogue in 1988.
No announcement has been made as to whether the position of Creative Director will be filled, or by whom.
