Spring-Summer 2011 – Always on the surreal side, Margiela’s collection opened with his model’s walking in an eerie fashion containing all the mannerisms of a zombie. This is not an offense. Margiela’s shop assistants wear the uniform of a mad scientist. This collection seemed to suggest the mad scientist had been experimenting on the zombie like models. Hair was positioned over the models faces. This created the creepy scene for the clothing. Long strait jackets of navy blue bore no embellishment. It was all very minimalist with any fastening on the clothes covered. A grey blazer was of boy fit, whilst the long trousers hung off the models like sting puppets. These were wide leg silk trousers, perfect for a day in the office. Light blue blouses were made to look like paper cut outs, as was a beige Mac.  It seemed the models were holding bill-board cut outs of the clothing themselves. This was very arty and creative but not applicable ready-to-wear. Jackets were also given this cardboard palette; ensuring geometric designs perpetrated the catwalk from all angles. Buttered leather was seen once more on the S/S 11 Milan catwalk, as was silk and a touch of glitter. This collection was symbolic of Margiela. Eerie, scientific and zombie like, just like his shop assistants uniform. This was more of an art show than a fashion collection.
