David Sims

Born: Sheffield, England, 1955

David Sims was born in England in October 1955.

He began his photographic career by assisting photographers Robert Erdmann and Norman Watson before joining the photographer’s agency M.A.P as a freelance photographer in 1989 and working with number of their clients.

For his first assignment he was asked to work on an ad campaign for Yohji Yamamoto, but he first caught people’s attention in 1993 when he started working with Calvin Klein, a collaboration which then continued for many years. The same year he signed a one year exclusive contract with the American edition of Harper’s Bazaar- a contract he signed again in 2000 and 2001.

In 1994 he received the “Young Photographer of the Year” distinction at Hyères’ Fashion Festival in France, and then the “Photographer of the Year” award a year later.

Since, he has worked for many magazines including W, The Face, Arena, i-D, L’Uomo Vogue, Arena Homme Plus, and international editions of Vogue Magazine and Dazed & Confused as well as collaborating with many high-profile brands amongst which Gap, Prada, Helmut Lang, Levis, Zara, Hugo Boss and Louis Vuitton.

In 2002 he shot his first Vogue Cover featuring model Isabeli Fontana.

More recently, Sims has worked with models Coco Rocha for Balenciaga, Kate Moss for Belstaff, Rosa Curtain for Pringle and Anett Griffel for Benetton. He also shot Lara Stone and Raquel Zimmermann for Calvin Klein and worked on ad campaigns for Balenciaga, Benetton, TSE, Burberry and Marc O’Polo.
