Malo

Founded By Giacomo and Alfredo Canessa in 1972

The two brothers, Giacoma and Alfredo Canessa, launched the company in 1972 focussing primarily on cashmere and knits. The following year the brothers moved the company to Tuscany, from where is began its cashmere production.

Growing as a presence during the 1970s and 1980s, the company was most widely recognized in Italy. In 1980 the company opened their first showroom in Milan.

During the 1990s the company increased its international presence, making their products available in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Dusseldorf. A series of flagship stores were opened at the same time.

The company was a global leader in cashmere knitwear.  In 1999 the company was purchased by the IT Holding Group. Under the label’s new ownership, the business launched women’s and men’s ready-to-wear labels.

By 2002 the company owned factories in Florence and Piacenza and over 26 stores. The following year a line of sunglasses was launched, designed by a member of the IT Holding Group. 2003 also saw stylist Gianni Bugli join the business.

In 2005 Fabio Pinas was appointed Creative Director of the label. The company presented for the first time at New York Fashion Week the following year. Two years later, in 2008, Alessandro Dell’Acqua took over. In 2010 the company changed ownership with the new owners creating a new direction for the label.

Malo is known for its exquisite Italian cashmere and knitwear. Designs are created for longevity with the clothing always cut proportionately and with the silhouette in mind. An artisan driven house, Malo is synonymous with simple luxury.
